Scholarship Information

The Pan African University is a scholarship awarding institution to students in Africa and the African diaspora. The proposed stipends and tuition fees are based on analysis of existing scholarship rates that are managed by the Commission of the African Union, namely:

  1. The Nyerere Scholarship Scheme
  2. The Expanded Nyerere programme (Intra-ACP Academic Mobility)
Monthly Stipend in US$ Medical Insurance

Monthly Rate

Annual Tuition Fee in US$
Master’s PhD Master’s PhD Master’s PhD
Nyerere Scholarship 500 500 4,000 4,000
Intra-ACP Mobility 750

(600 Euro)

1,125

(900 Euro)

75 Euro 75 Euro 4,375

(3,500 Euro)

5,000

(4,000 Euro)

Note: 1EURO is assumed to be equivalent to 1.25 US$. Tuition fees in African Universities vary significantly across disciplines, and from one country to another, ranging from below 1000 US$ to over 7000 US$ per year. So an average annual tuition fee of 4000 US$ is estimated for the Nyerere Scholarship.

Pan African University Scholarship Rates

  1. It is noted that the Nyerere rate was determined in 2006, and is due for an upward review, while the Intra-ACP rate was determined in 2010 following an extensive study of salaries and cost of living in African Universities. Based on this, the rate of stipends for the PAU is proposed to be 750 US$ for Master’s and 1,100 US$ for PhD
  2. The tuition fee for the PAU is determined by making an average of the Nyerere scholarship scheme and the Intra-ACP academic mobility. Accordingly, the annual tuition fee is proposed to be 4200 US$ for Master’s and 4,800US$ for PhD.
  3. Each PAU institute will ensure that students’ medical insurance is covered from disbursed stipends.  So there will be no extra payment for medical insurance.

Application Procedure

PAU student admission and enrollment are done on a competitive basis. Calls for scholarship applications are issued and widely disseminated by the Rectorate and students apply online. The second stage of the process is handled at the level of the Institutes who establish juries of local, regional and international experts to select students. The Institute Boards submit the final list of selected students to the Rectorate, and the Senate makes recommendations on student admissions to the Council.

Students are admitted from all African countries with no more than 20% from the Host Country and gender balance in the percentage of students admitted is an important consideration. Each PAU student signs a scholarship agreement with the AUC, obliging the beneficiaries to work in Africa upon the completion of their studies. Students receive a monthly stipend to cover their living expenses for the entire duration of their study, including tuition, research and transport fees. Students are awarded joint degrees of PAU and the Host Universities.

Of course, you can. But I am afraid your mail came in late. Application for the PAU Scholarship closed yesterday. But you may still try sending in your application though.

You should consider applying for it next year, or to other scholarships… We wish you the best.
