See the Young Activist that Wants to Save the World by Protecting Marine Animals from Humans

Remember when we used pens to write letters on paper and licked stamps to send them? Yeah, we don’t either. But six-year-old Audrey Kim, from Irving, California, is using the nearly-lost art of letter writing to fight for our oceans. Audrey loves everything in the ocean, and when she learned about oil spills and the threat they pose to marine life, she immediately asked her parents, “Can I write a note for President Obama?”

Apparently, she is pretty eloquent for a six-year-old because, despite his busy schedule, the Commander and Chief responded telling Audrey that “Hearing from engaged young people like you gives me great hope for the future.” But Audrey didn’t stop there

She wanted to do more and so, with the help of her parents, she started raising money for The Pacific Marine Mammal Center (PMMC) through a YouCaring Campaign. PMMC specializes in taking in seals and other animals who have been stranded or appear to be suffering from injuries, and they nurse them back to health so they can be released back into the wild. PMMC recently saved five starving sea lion pups, so Audrey’s funds will go to their recovery. To help get the word out Audrey and her mom are making paper roses and handing them out for free in the community.

When asked what she wants to happen to the sea lion pups, Audrey replied she wants, “The seals go back home, so they can be with their family.” She certainly a little girl who has put her passion into action, something we greatly admire and respect here at One Green Planet!

We completely agree with Obama’s sentiment – Audrey gives us some much-needed hope for the future. We may not have the fundraising capabilities of an adorable six-year-old with a rose, but we can help protect marine life by reducing our plastic waste. Consider this, 8.8 million tons of plastic are dumped into the oceans every year and this plastic kills marine animals every day. Over 700 marine species are in danger of extinction due to the threat that plastic pollution poses to them. We can all make a difference for marine animals by actively working to reduce our impact on the oceans. If you’re inspired to get started after reading this story,  join One Green Planet’s #CrushPlastic campaign and help Audrey protect our oceans!
